Curriculum

 EYFS Curriculum

At Tower Hill Nursery in Great Barr, Birmingham, we follow the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which allows children to learn through play from birth through to 5 years old. Our curriculum is a balance between free choice ‘the constant curriculum’ and adult structured activities. These are all based on the children’s interests and current areas of focused development. Play opportunities are provided, which are non-stereotypical and available to all children, promoting teaching and learning from an enabling environment and skilled practitioners.

Areas of learning

The EYFS allows practitioners to make assessment judgements based on the seven areas of learning: 3 Prime Areas and 4 Specific Areas.
Prime Areas:
  • Communication and Language - Involves children being provided with the opportunity to experience a language rich environment; develop confidence in expressing wants, needs and feelings and being able to speak and listen in a variety of context.
  • Physical Development – Involves children being encouraged to be interactive and active in their learning and develop control, coordination and movement. They are supported in understanding the importance of physical activity and how to make informed healthy choices at mealtimes.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – involves supporting children in developing a strong, positive sense of themselves, and of others; from strong attachments and relationships to developing respect for others, developing social skills and learning how to effectively manage feelings. This area also supports the children in understanding appropriate behaviour and develop confidence in their own abilities.
Specific Areas:
  • Literacy – Encourages children to link sounds and letters and begin to read and write. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials to ignite their interests.
  • Mathematics – Encourages opportunities to develop and improve counting skills, understanding numbers, calculating and addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, space and measures.
  • Understanding the World – involves supporting children in making sense of the world around them and their community by providing opportunities to explore. Observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
  • Expressive Arts and Design – Enables children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as encouraging the sharing of thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design and technology.

EYFS extended curriculum

Children have access to a constant curriculum, where activities and learning opportunities are available for all children to access independently during their time in nursery.

Additional planning called the ‘Extended Provision’ is also provided. This involves carefully planned activities, opportunities and experiences for children provided by the practitioner. All children are taken into consideration, either individually or grouped, including development needs and current interests.

Outdoor provision is available every day and is also included in the continuous provision. Children can access the outdoors in all weather conditions if they want to.
